An oldie- but who doesn’t love playing in water? Fill up a tub outside or the bathtub or the kitchen sink.

Find items that you can put into the water to test for density/buoyancy.  Predict first- will it float? Try to find items that will fool people! How would you describe what it takes for something to float?

If you have an empty toilet tissue roll (and really, who doesn’t?) turn it into a car that can roll down a ramp. Once you finish and test it, see if you can improve on your design!! Can you have a contest to see whose “car” runs the best? A great variation is to slow it down.What changes will slow your car down?

You’ll need water, a ziplock sandwich bag, and sharp pencils. Fill the bag with water and seal it. Poke a pencil through the bag (below waterline) and out the other side without removing it. With that pencil in place, add another. What do you notice?  (Maybe do this one over the sink, bathtub, or outside.)

Go outside and find north, south, east, and west. Notice the clouds, the temperature, and the wind. Can you predict the next rain shower? Were you correct? What information did you use? You could make a daily chart and note what time the rains come. Or track the sunny days! But remember, never look directly at the sun!

Science Mystery Markers

You will need paper towels cut into strips, a bowl of water, and some markers. Make a wavy line near the bottom of each strip. Set a strip into the water, but keep the colored line above the water. Wait for it…. The water should inch up the towel and reveal something surprising. See if some colors work better than others.

(You can also test different brands of towels!!)

Dig up a patch of dirt, spread it out, and examine the soil in your yard. Try looking at soil samples from a couple of different locations. Notice the color and texture of your soil.  What else can you find in the dirt? (Please ask before you start digging!!)
